 ABOUT MODEL COLONY KARACHI

Model Colony is surrounded by Malir Cantonment and Memon Goth. Jinnah International Airport is just a 7-minute drive from Model Colony in Malir. The area has been divided into 7 union councils: Model Colony, Saudabad, Kala Board, Khokrapar, Gharibabad, Jafar-e-Tayyar and Ghazi Brohi Goth. Model Colony is a renowned neighbourhood of Model Colony. Fatima Jinnah, Quaid-e-Azam’s sister, contacted a town planner, Mr Makki, to design a Model Muhajir Colony. It was an upscale society until around 1980s, but property in the area is now fairly affordable.

Kala Board, Malir City 15, Muhabbat Nagar, Saudabad and Darakhshan Society are some other popular neighbourhoods in the area. Almost three decades ago, many dignitaries and government officials used to live in Saudabad. Khokhrapar, which neighbours Saudabad, is famous for connecting Pakistan with India through its train service, ‘Thar Express,’ which passes through the Indian village, Munabao. However, this isn’t the only connection Khokhrapar shares with India. Following the independence of Pakistan from the British Raj in 1947, muhajirs, or mostly Muslim immigrants from India, who had settled in Malir, found the area similar to a border town in Tharparkar District named Khokhrapar. So, they named a section of Malir after that town. It was later named ‘Azam Colony,’ to honor the governor of West Pakistan at the time, Muhammad Azam Khan. However, locals still use the name Khokhrapar to refer to the neighbourhood.
