The project has now entered the technical evaluation phase, where four consulting firms have submitted bids to conduct a detailed feasibility study. The most competitive bidder will be awarded the contract for preparing the feasibility report and designing the tunnel.

The tunnel proposal was initiated in response to persistent concerns from various stakeholders about frequent accidents along this steep and risky segment of the motorway. These concerns were formally presented to the Prime Minister’s Steering Committee, which recommended the construction of a tunnel to ensure safer travel and smoother traffic flow.

In a recent meeting chaired by NHA General Manager Hafiz Tahir, the initial project scope was finalized. According to NHA officials, the tunnel aims to provide a safer alternative route, particularly for heavy vehicles that often struggle with braking and stability on the current road through the Salt Range.

Construction will begin once the feasibility study is completed and approvals are in place. The project is seen as a major infrastructure upgrade that will not only enhance road safety but also facilitate more efficient transport of goods and passengers between Punjab and Islamabad.

Authorities believe this development will help modernize a critical and challenging segment of the national highway network, boosting both logistical operations and commuter safety.
