CDA Launches Major Infrastructure Projects to Upgrade Islamabad’s Road Network

Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has added two major infrastructure initiatives to its latest development portfolio — the rehabilitation of the Islamabad Expressway service road and the construction of a new road connecting Margalla Road to the city’s boundary, where it will link with a proposed route to Rawalpindi.

Officials revealed that the planning and revenue departments are in the final stages of land acquisition for the new road. Once completed, the route is expected to enhance intercity connectivity and ease traffic congestion on existing arteries.

The Islamabad Expressway service road — particularly the deteriorated Sohan-to-Koral stretch — has long been in need of repair. The long-awaited reconstruction will significantly improve driving conditions, safety, and daily traffic flow for thousands of commuters.

Meanwhile, work on the T-Chowk flyover, a PKR 1.4 billion project at the intersection of GT Road and the Islamabad Expressway, is progressing steadily. The three-lane, 1.1-kilometre-long flyover is nearly 46% complete and is expected to be finished within the next 150 days. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the project last month.

CDA officials also confirmed that the Shaheen Chowk project has been awarded and will be officially launched soon. Additionally, the authority is moving ahead with plans for an underpass at Khyaban-i-Iqbal (Margalla Road) intersecting 9th Avenue — a key corridor that connects several government offices and educational institutions — to help reduce traffic congestion.

According to the CDA, these projects are part of an ongoing citywide initiative to modernise Islamabad’s transport infrastructure and resolve long-standing traffic bottlenecks, ensuring smoother mobility and improved urban accessibility.
