During the British colonial era in 1909, they founded Jinnah Stadium, initially naming it Connelly Park after Mr. Connelly, the then-British Deputy Commissioner of Sialkot. In the 1950s, the stadium’s name changed to Jinnah Park, paying homage to the father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
In 1979, the stadium underwent significant renovations, including the construction of a new pavilion and seating, leading to its renaming as Jinnah Stadium. Since then, it has served as the home ground of the illustrious Sialkot Stallions.
Jinnah Stadium has hosted several memorable cricketing encounters over the years. Notably, it witnessed Pakistan’s first-ever One Day International (ODI) match at home in 1976, when they faced New Zealand. The ground also witnessed New Zealand’s first-ever ODI against Pakistan, making it an auspicious beginning for both teams.
Known for its green-top pitches that favour fast bowlers, Jinnah Stadium owes the reputation to the meticulous efforts of Curator Abdul Ghani, who has prepared pitches for all international matches. The stadium’s cricketing legacy includes four Test matches and nine ODIs, with each match etching unforgettable memories in the hearts of cricket enthusiasts.
Jinnah Stadium is one of the top 10 cricket stadiums in Pakistan. In 1984, an emotionally charged Pakistan-India ODI came to a standstill when news of the assassination of the then-Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, reached the ground. As India was in the middle of their innings, the match’s abandonment left a poignant mark on the stadium’s memories.
Another moment etched in the stadium’s history occurred during India’s tour of Pakistan in 1989. In the 4th test of the series played at Jinnah Stadium, a young Sachin Tendulkar faced a fiery bouncer from Pakistani pace bowler Waqar Younis, resulting in a serious injury. Despite the setback, Tendulkar displayed remarkable grit and returned to the crease later to score a pivotal 57 runs, salvaging the test match and the series for India.
Jinnah Stadium has witnessed remarkable cricketing records that add to its legacy. Pakistan achieved their highest team total of 423/5d against Sri Lanka here in December 1991 in Tests. Conversely, Sri Lanka recorded their lowest team total of 157 against Pakistan at this historic ground in October 1985.
In the ODIs, the Indian cricket team registered its lowest-ever team total of 79 against Pakistan during their tour in October 1978. Conversely, Pakistan’s highest team total of 277/9 against New Zealand was achieved at Jinnah Stadium in December 1996.
Over the years, Jinnah Stadium has grown into a hub of cricketing excellence. In 2016, the Sialkot Cricket Academy was established at the stadium, nurturing young talents and fostering the future of Pakistan’s cricket.
Moreover, in September 2019, the Pakistan Cricket Board named Jinnah Stadium as one of the venues to host matches in the prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.
