Developed at a cost of Rs9 billion (approx. USD 32 million) by the Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (CBD Punjab), the smart road features cutting-edge infrastructure aimed at improving traffic flow, enhancing sustainability, and supporting modern urban growth.

Speaking on the development, CBD Punjab CEO Imran Amin described Route 47 as the “central boulevard” of Lahore’s rising Central Business District (CBD), built to international standards with smart infrastructure components. Notable features include a 1-kilometer flyover, dedicated lanes for pedestrians and cyclists, and a modern drainage system to mitigate flooding during monsoons.

An innovative aspect of the project is the installation of solar panel canopies along sidewalks, offering both shade and energy generation of up to one megawatt, making Route 47 Pakistan’s first smart road that combines mobility with renewable energy production.

Constructed through the site of the former Walton Airport, the route is part of the broader transformation of the area into a vertical commercial and business hub. Additional developments include a new sewage and stormwater system, two multi-level parking plazas, and an artificial lake designed to manage rainwater sustainably.

The completion of Route 47 is being hailed as a milestone in Lahore’s urban evolution, setting the stage for the city to emerge as a leading center for business, innovation, and smart infrastructure.
