Major Road and Mobility Projects Approved Under Karachi Transformation Drive

Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has approved the Karachi Transformation Plan during a joint meeting with the Frontier Works Organisation, the local government department and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, setting the stage for large-scale development across the city.

According to an official statement, the Sindh government will provide a one-time grant-in-aid of PKR 84.796 billion to fund 523 development schemes in Karachi. In addition, PKR 26.282 billion has been approved under the Federal Public Sector Development Programme for city-related projects.

The chief minister said collaboration with the Frontier Works Organisation is aimed at ensuring timely execution, transparency and quality in major and priority infrastructure projects. He stressed that the objective is to upgrade Karachi’s infrastructure to international standards, with a focus on improved connectivity, urban mobility and overall city development.

Under the plan, six priority infrastructure projects valued at PKR 10.72 billion have been earmarked for immediate implementation. These include rehabilitation of the road linking M-9 to Malir-15 via Jinnah Avenue and Shahrah-e-Faisal, construction of a right-turn underpass at Malir Halt, a flyover connecting Airport Road to Star Gate on Shahrah-e-Faisal, rehabilitation of the Hawksbay road corridor from Y-Junction to Machli Chowk, and construction of a flyover at Sohrab Goth.

Officials said these projects are intended to ease long-standing traffic congestion, improve access to the airport and key industrial zones, and strengthen intercity and logistics routes.

The chief minister directed engineers from FWO, along with officials from the local government department and KMC, to complete design work and identify utility relocations by the end of February so that construction can begin in March.

Overall, the Karachi Transformation Plan includes 523 proposed schemes covering road rehabilitation, traffic management, flyovers, parks and beautification of seven major roads. Implementation will be carried out by agencies including KMC, the Karachi Development Authority, Karachi Mega Schemes and other relevant city authorities.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the projects were selected through on-ground assessments, departmental reviews and consultations with stakeholders to ensure effective planning, smooth execution and visible improvements in the city’s infrastructure and civic landscape.
