Pak Railways to retrieve thousands of acres of its land

Islamabad: Senator Asad Ali Khan Junejo recently chaired a committee meeting to discuss the roles and performance of Pakistan Railways (PR) Police role in clearing off encroachments.

The Senate Standing Committee on Railways directed the PR to submit details of its illegally encroached land in Lahore, Mardan division and Tando Adam. The organization was urged to take steps for land retrieval.

Police Railways Inspector General Wajid Zia informed the committee that 3,979 acres of land had been illegally encroached all across the country. However only 801 acres have been successfully retrieved. A total of 7000 police personnel had been sanctioned but the available number is not more than 5000. The PR police approval from the establishment division to overcome staff shortage.

The committee has stressed on constituting a special unit of Railways Police to retrieve the encroached land.

Other agendas for discussion in the meeting included, amendment of the railway laws for an effective performance of Railway Police. Innovative steps introduced by the railway authorities to improve services were also appreciated.
