Power generation resumes after earthquake in Mangla

LAHORE: After the suspension of power generation operations by all 10 turbines (each of 100MW) for a couple of hours at Mangla due to the earthquake, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) resumed the power supply as they deemed that it was safe, restoring 700MW to the national grid and easing fears of a spike in load shedding, told WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen (R) Muzammil Hussain.

The Upper-Jhelum canal was also shut by Punjab’s irrigation department as a precautionary measure to avoid any damage from aftershocks.

Keeping in view the appearance of silt and sediments in the water, which can be devastating for power generation, the power was shut down until it was safe to resume by checking the behaviour, seepage, and sediments at the reservoirs.

As soon as the water appeared clean, power generation was restarted as there was no damage to the Mangla reservoir and power station.

Furthermore, teams had been deputed to check the conditions of the mainline, especially between Lahore and Rawalpindi, and submit a report to the concerned department.
