KARACHI: During a press conference held on Thursday, Spokesperson for the Government of Sindh Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced that, starting from October 1st, there will be a complete ban on the sale, manufacture and use of plastic bags in the province.

The decision had been taken by the provincial environment department with the support of the provincial government. An awareness campaign has been kicked off to spread awareness about the harmful effects of using plastic bags. In accordance with the campaign, cloth bags have been distributed among the citizens to encourage their use.

Mr. Wahab informed that, after the October 1 deadline, violators of the ban will face legal proceedings. Prior to this notice, the Sindh Assembly had been told that the provincial government was avoiding taking any action against the manufacturers of plastic shopping bags, as it would lead to the shutdown of their industry and render joblessness.

Chief Minister Sindh, Murad Ali Shah urged the public to ditch plastic bags in a video message. He said that the government will encourage the use of cloth or paper bags, and appealed to the masses to join the campaign curb pollution.

“Say no to plastic bags,” he said in conclusion to his message.
