WAPDA initiates development projects worth Rs100bn

LAHORE: To facilitate the general public, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has initiated several development projects worth Rs100 billion including the confidence-building measures (CBM) of Diamer Bhasha Dam, Mohmand Dam, Dasu Dam and Tarbela Fifth Extension project.

Apart from generating low-cost hydel electricity, developing irrigated agriculture, and mitigating devastating floods, the authority is responsible for the socio-economic development of people residing in project areas.

To uplift project areas, WAPDA has granted a sum of Rs78.5 billion for various socio-economic projects around Diamer Bhasha Dam being constructed in Chilas town of Gilgit-Baltistan, with a water storage capacity of 8.1MAF and installed power generation capacity of 4,500 megawatts.

A sum of Rs4.57 billion has been allocated for the completion of projects around Mohmand Dam being built across the Swat River in the Mohmand tribal district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The project has a gross water storage capacity of 1.2 MAF and a power generation capacity of 800MW.

A total of Rs17.35 billion has been allocated for development projects related to resettlement, social development and environmental management for property alleviation, around Dasu Hydropower Project being constructed in KP, across the Indus River in Kohistan district.

The projects impacting healthcare, education facilities, etc. are aimed at promoting infrastructure development, improving quality of life and rating on the Human Development Index, read a statement released by WAPDA.
