ISLAMABAD: Construction of the Babusar Top tunnel connecting Kaghan Valley to Chilas, Gilgit Baltistan will start as soon as funds for the project are allocated in the next budget, said a senior official of the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan.
While the existing Babusar Pass serves the same purpose, the route is considered treacherous and is frequently shut down in bad weather. The tunnel, on the other hand, will be built underground to facilitate travelling even in the coldest of weathers.
The official further said that Gilgit Baltistan will also benefit from industrial and economic zones that would be potentially established under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project to uplift the region and bring it at par with developed parts of the country.
He added that the proposed zones in the tax-exempt territory will not only bring in major gains for the entire country, but will also provide unprecedented financial and developmental opportunities to the local populace.
