Karachi: The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) recently granted approval for a coal storage facility, while ignoring court directives and its own law, which requires any project that is likely to cause adverse environmental effects to go through an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and a public review.

According to sources, the 23-acre coal storage project was approved on the basis of an Initial Environmental Examination (IEE), which is a preliminary review meant for projects that do not require a public review, and don’t hold any significant impacts on the environment.
