Committee wants construction ban lifted on government housing

Islamabad: The Standing Committee on Housing and Works has recommended lifting of ban on construction of houses for federal government employees. The committee quoted the swelling gap between available housing and the growing general waiting list of federal employees. All 17,496 houses are allotted while 25,245 federal government employees are on the waiting list. Nearly 500,000 government employees have not applied yet.

The Standing Committee on Housing and Works had convened under the Chairmanship of Engineer Muhammad, Najeeb Haroon. The committee also received presentations on working of Ministry of Housing and Works, Estate Office, Federal Government Employees Housing Foundation and Naya Pakistan Programme, respectively.

Chairman Task Force, Naya Pakistan Housing Programme, Zaigham Mahmood Rizvi, informed that low income families shall be provided shelter under the programme. However, legislation to create Naya Pakistan Housing Authority is still pending.
