Federal Government Approves PKR 6.68bn Extension of Margalla Highway to Motorway-1

Islamabad: The federal government has given the green light to extend Margalla Highway from GT Road Sangjani to Motorway-1, approving a revised project cost of PKR 6.681 billion. The extension aims to create a direct link to the motorway network, ultimately easing traffic pressure in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

According to official documents released on Wednesday, the National Highway Authority (NHA) will oversee the project, which starts beyond the Sangjani grid station. Key components include semi-directional ramps on Shahrah-Mehr Road, a bridge over the Bahuda Kas stream, and a connection to Quaid-e-Azam Road inside the AWT housing society.

The plan also features the remodelling of the current Sangjani/AWT interchange and the construction of service roads on both sides of the extended highway.

Once completed, the new corridor is expected to provide an alternative route for motorists entering Islamabad and Rawalpindi via the motorway, helping ease congestion at Chungi No. 26 on Srinagar Highway, a point known for frequent blockages during political events.

Officials noted that the Margalla Highway extension will not only smooth traffic flow but also strengthen regional connectivity, supporting broader infrastructure upgrades across the capital.
