Its jurisdiction was expanded to include all national highways in 2001, and the agency was rebranded as the National Highways & Motorway Police. In this blog, Graana.com has discussed the services and responsibilities of the NH&MP and its importance in ensuring the safety of all road users.

Overview of National Highway & Motorway Police

The National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) is a law enforcement agency responsible for ensuring the safety of drivers and commuters on Pakistan’s network of motorways and highways.

These roads connect the southern regions of Gwadar and Karachi with the northern areas. This includues the capital city of Islamabad and Lahore, all the way up to the mountainous region of Gilgit-Baltistan. The NHMP patrols these roads using a fleet of SUVs, heavy motorbikes, and cars and provides roadside assistance to those in need.

The agency has headquarters in Islamabad and is led by the Inspector General of the Police (IGP) and his Deputy Inspector General (DIG) who oversee different zones.

History of National Highway & Motorway Police

The National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) was established in 1997 as a result of reforms in the policing system of Pakistan, which brought in a new and efficient task force. Initially, it was known as Pakistan Motorways Police and was only responsible for patrolling the country’s motorways such as M-2.

However, due to its success, the government decided to expand the jurisdiction of the agency to cover all the national highways, starting with the N-5, and gradually handed over control to the NHMP in phases. Consequently, the agency was officially renamed as National Highways & Motorway Police in 2001.
