Calm down.

Everything is going to be okay.

We will all get through this difficult time together.

Social distancing might change things for us but it cannot stop us from celebrating the holy month of Ramzan with full zeal and dedication.

You can still perform all your duties while maintaining social distance.

How? Read on.

What is Social Distancing?

Social distancing, also called physical distancing, is a set of non-pharmaceutical interventions or measures taken to prevent the spread of a contagious disease by maintaining a physical distance between people and reducing the number of times people come into close contact with each other.

The primary objective of social distancing is to slow the growth and spread of disease. In the current scenario, we must adopt the rules of social distancing to keep ourselves and our loved ones away from the dangers of coronavirus.

How to Maintain Social Distancing During Ramzan?

We know how difficult it is to lock ourselves up in our homes this Ramzan. For us, traditionally Ramzan is all about socializing and doing good deeds for the community. However, we must bear in mind that things are different this year.

It is our social, moral, and religious obligation to maintain social distancing during Ramzan. There are so many things to do at home during the coronavirus outbreak. So, stay safe, stay indoors, and fight against this epidemic.

 1. Stay Home As Much As You Can

Do not roam around the city without any reason. We know staying at home can get frustrating and boring but sometimes it is mandatory to let go of things we love doing to save ourselves and our families.

Stay indoors and only go outside when it is necessary. When you go out, you encounter many people. Some of them might have coronavirus which they can transfer to you. So, to keep yourself coronavirus free, restrict your outdoor activities. Get yourself busy in some exciting indoor activities like planting indoor plants, etc.

Even if you are inside your house, maintain as much distance with your family members as possible. The doctors recommend maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet from one another whenever possible.

While you are at home, spend time in recitation of the Holy Quran and remembrance of Allah. This is the perfect time to refresh your religious values and piety. You can also watch YouTube videos on various aspects of faith, and become more knowledgeable about your faith by listening to various experts online.

 2. Practice Good Hygiene

Abu Malik Al-Ash`ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Purity is half of iman (faith).“

Did you know that Allah rewards us even for maintaining good hygiene?

This is the beauty of Islam. You can get bundles of rewards just by doing everyday things.

Apart from maintaining distance from one another, it is essential to maintain good hygiene as well. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least thirty seconds. If you are out and about for whatever reason, carry a hand sanitizer with you and use it at regular intervals.

If you are going outside, e.g. to shop for groceries, do not forget to wear a mask and gloves. Wear clothes that cover your whole body. If you bring home anything from outside, leave the things in isolation for at least 8 hours and then use those items. Also, make sure you disinfect all the items if you possibly can as well.

Cover your mouth while coughing and sneezing. Use tissues while sneezing and discard the used tissues properly.

 3. Shop Online When Possible

We all miss wandering outside like free souls. But, during these hard times, it is crucial to stay indoors. Thanks to information technology and science, now we can shop from the comfort of our houses.

Many online stores deliver groceries, clothes, and other essential items at your doorstep. By using different apps you can even pay your phone bills and utility bills.

Many banks are also providing free online transactions so you can transfer money without going to the bank.

These facilities are introduced so that you won’t have to worry about leaving your house at this time. Avail them and keep yourself, your family and your friends safe.

 4. Pray at Home

Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say: “If you hear that (the plague) is in a land, do not go there, and if it breaks out in a land where you are, do not leave, fleeing from it.”

Ramzan is all about religious gatherings, praying together at mosques and good deeds. However, this year, it is our obligation as responsible citizens to pray at home.

Coronavirus spreads like wildfire in social gatherings. So, instead of putting everyone at risk, pray at home. Maybe one of the elders at home can lead the Taraweeh prayers in jamaat at home? This is a very special experience and brings everyone closer together.

It is a time of great difficulty and frustration and it is very hard for us to adopt new habits especially during Ramzan. But, we need to follow precautionary measurements to stay away from this pandemic.

 5. Do Not Host Iftar Parties

We all miss iftar parties and hanging out with friends and family members. But, remember that all this isolation and social distancing is for our own good and safety.

This Ramzan, instead of throwing iftar parties at home, make iftar boxes for security forces and medical staff members who are working day and night at the frontline to protect us from the coronavirus.

You can also donate the money to charities who are providing monthly ration to people who cannot afford it. Islam is all about sharing and sacrificing. Let’s make this Ramzan more special by sharing with the most deserving people in our society, that are most affected by this pandemic.
