Brief History of NSU

The origins of NSU are rooted in the creation of two important institutions. In 1985, the National Technical Teachers’ Training College (NTTTC) was founded with support from the Asian Development Bank’s Technical Education Project.

Its primary goal was to enhance the quality of technical education in Pakistan, emphasising both quantity and excellence. Furthermore, in 1989, the Federal Government initiated the Institute for Promotion of Science Education and Training (IPSET) to strengthen science education nationwide.

Recognising the need for a more unified approach, the Federal Government took a significant step in 1997. It merged NTTTC and IPSET, giving rise to the National Institute of Science and Technical Education (NISTE).

During this period, NISTE functioned as a subordinate office under the Ministry of Education. This merger represented a crucial turning point in the development of institutions dedicated to improving education and nurturing skill development in Pakistan.

However, the 18th amendment to the Constitution in 2010 set the stage for a significant transformation. The Federal Government upgraded NISTE into a Degree Awarding Institute (DAI). This move allowed NISTE to offer a range of undergraduate and graduate-level engineering technology programs to meet the demands of the country’s industries.

Following international and regional trends, the government made a forward-thinking decision to transform NISTE into what is now known as the National Skills University (NSU). This transformation was formalized when the Parliament of Pakistan approved the Act to upgrade NISTE into NSU on March 7, 2018. Shortly after, on March 12, 2018, the President of Pakistan approved NSU’s charter.

The primary aim behind establishing NSU, Pakistan’s inaugural National Skills University, was to address the pressing need for a substantial number of highly skilled graduate and post-graduate technologists across various disciplines. It was done to effectively meet the country’s growing demands for skilled professionals.
