During the year 1991, Zong initiated Operations as Paktel by Cable & Wireless. It was the first-ever company in Pakistan which was given a free license for the execution of mobile phone services. In 2004 the company launched Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) services; till then, they used to carry out Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) services.
In 2003, Paktel from Cable & Wireless was sold to Millicom Corporation. Millicom International Cellular S.A. desired to sell its share in Paktel Limited to China Mobile on January 2007. This deal implied value for Paktel. The name of the company Paktel Limited was changed to China Mobile Pakistan in May 2007.
During the same year, China Mobile declared that they had expanded their share in China Mobile Pakistan. Later on April 1, 2008, Paktel was rebranded to Zong.

Zong Monthly Internet Packages
Zong is collaborating with Meta (Facebook) to introduce a programme called Free Basics. This service gives access to more than 50 services that cover various categories, including health, news, sports, travel, entertainment, education, and services for women. Zong is currently provisioning cellular and mobile data services to the whole market of Pakistan. They offer a wide variety of bands, including 2G, 3G, and 4G, with them now among the first in line to obtain a 5G license in Pakistan.
